Dr. Jayas Appointed as Board Vice-Chair

At their recent meeting, the TRIUMF Board of Management appointed Dr. Digvir S. Jayas, Vice-President (Research and International) and Distinguished Professor from the University of Manitoba, to serve as Vice-Chair of the TRIUMF Board of Management.

Dr. Steven N. Liss, Professor & Vice-Principal (Research) at Queen's University, and Chair of the Board said, “We’re pleased with the unanimous support from the TRIUMF Board for Dr. Jayas’ appointment as Vice-Chair. Digvir also chairs the Innovation and Industrial Partnerships Committee of the Board and brings many years of experience and leadership skills to this position. I look forward to working with him in this role and to his increased involvement with the TRIUMF community.”

TRIUMF is owned and operated as a joint venture by a consortium of nineteen Canadian universities. TRIUMF receives operating support from the Government of Canada through a contribution agreement via National Research Council Canada; the Government of British Columbia provides capital for new buildings.

The TRIUMF Board of Management is responsible for overseeing the broad research program that encompasses nuclear and particle physics, materials science, accelerator science, and nuclear medicine and facilitates two-way communication between the research community and the member universities.

Distinguished Professor Dr. Digvir Jayas was educated at the G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology in Pantnagar, India; the University of Manitoba, and the University of Saskatchewan. He held a Canada Research Chair in Stored-Grain Ecosystems, and conducts research related to drying, handling and storing grains and oilseeds and digital image processing for grading and processing operations in the Agri-Food industry. He has authored or co-authored over 800 technical articles in scientific journals, conference proceedings and books. He has collaborated with researchers in several countries but has had significant impact on development of efficient grain storage, handling and drying systems in Canada, China, India, Ukraine and USA. Dr. Jayas has received awards from several organizations in recognition of his research and professional contributions, such as the 2008 NSERC Brockhouse Canada Prize. In 2009, he was inducted as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.
