By unanimous agreement among the judges, the recipient of the 2007 Division of Nuclear Physics Thesis Prize is Dr. Simon Turbide. Dr. Turbide earned his Ph.D from McGill University in 2006 for the work “Electromagnetic radiation from matter under extreme conditions,” a theoretical work relating to the production of electromagnetic radiation during relativistic heavy ion collisions. The work was performed under the supervision of Charles Gale.

This thesis prize was set up in 2005 by the DNP to be awarded in Experimental or Theoretical Nuclear Physics to any student receiving a Ph.D degree in Experimental or Theoretical Nuclear Physics from a Canadian University. The selection for the 2007 Prize was adjudicated by a committee consisting of Rituparna Kanungo (representing TRIUMF), Wim van Oers and Garth Huber. Three theses were nominated, representing a broad variety of topics in nuclear physics.

Dr. Turbide received a cash award of $750 from the DNP and was invited to give a talk at the Winter Nuclear & Particle Physics Conference in Banff, February 15, 2008. TRIUMF was pleased to cover the travel expenses for this talk and congratulates Dr. Turbide.

Simon Turbide will be presenting a seminar talk at TRIUMF on February 19, 2008.
