TRIUMF Sponsors BODY WORLDS & The Brain

17 September 2010

Science World's newest exhibit, BODY WORLDS & The Brain is giving visitors a chance to see inside the central command centre of our lives, our brain, in a way that only a select few ever get the chance to experience.

In this latest exhibition by anatomist Dr. Gunther von Hagens, the brain takes centre stage, giving us a unique view of how this vital organ and animating force transforms itself continually throughout our lives. This Vancouver premiere features recent findings in neuroscience, including information on brain development, function, disease, disorders, and performance.

TRIUMF and its partners—the UBC Brain Research Centre, and MDS Nordion—are proud to support and be involved in this exhibition. Medical Isotopes developed at TRIUMF and MDS Nordion are, for instance, used to detect Parkinson's disease in patients at the UBC Brain Research Centre, and in the future, this same technology could also be used to detect Alzheimer's Disease. Detection of these diseases is key in learning about them, the differences of each, and being able to work towards a deeper understanding, ultimately seeking cure and prevention.

The exhibit contains 200 real body specimens, including full‐body plastinates, refined portrait photography, and multimedia in an acclaimed study in anatomy and neuroscience. The exhibit includes discussions of neuroscience and the plasticity of the brain through developmental and adult stages as well as certain diseases and disorders. A shocking example of severe Alzheimers is presented at the exhibit - a plump and healthy normal brain is contrasted wtih and another brain which has suffered from severe Alzheimer's - shockingly shriveled in comparison.

November is Medical Imaging Month - A number of talks will be presented by TRIUMF researchers. Visit the Science World Events page for updates and more information.
