TRIUMF Style Guide FAQ

Note from the Director

What is a Style Guide?

A Style Guide is a document that acts as a baseline and reference point for all documents within an organization. A Style Guide offers outlines of simple design standards that can be applied to all documents to bring a cohesive nature to an organizations documents.

TRIUMF's Style Guide is a resource that contains templates, colours, logo guidelines, and other useful instructions about how to represent TRIUMF. It focuses on print and presentation documents, ranging from letterheads to posters to PowerPoint presentations.

Why does TRIUMF have a Style Guide now?

TRIUMF's reputation as a leading subatomic physics laboratory has been growing at both the national and international level. Presenting TRIUMF with a consistent, unified image is just one way to reinforce and educate people about our lab. It is one of the many tools we have in creating a stronger voice for TRIUMF.

When should I use the Style Guide?

In general, most people will just need to download the template appropriate for a particular use (letterhead, presentation, scientific poster, etc.). The text boxes in the template provide notes on all of the the guidelines you will need to follow for that particular template (i.e. font, size, etc.). That way, you should never have to reference back to the Style Guide.

If you need to create or update a document that is outside of these common forms, the Style Guide is available for reference. An example of when you would need the Style Guide is if you are updating a form. You can come to the Style Guide pages and download the TRIUMF logo, and use the other forms as a guide to make your form match the other documents.

If you have any questions about updating or creating documents with the Style Guide, feel free to contact Jennifer Kaban, Web Publishing Coordinator.

I noticed all the templates have the 40 Year Logo on them...

In January 2010, the 40 year logo will be replaced with the regular TRIUMF logo in all templates. The rest of the document will stay the same.

Does the pdf version of the Style Guide have the same information as the website?

Yes. The pdf version is a useful tool to have on your desk to quickly check colours or fonts. On the website, we've been able to supplement the material with templates and logos to download.

How does the Style Guide help me?

It helps you by providing ready-to-use templates for download, and can answer basic questions like "How should I use the logo and tagline?" and  "What colours should I use?"

What if I'm having problems downloading the logo?

Contact Jennifer Kaban, Web Publishing Coordinator.

Is the Style Guide a controlled TRIUMF document?

In this initial stage, the Style Guide is not a controlled document. It's up to you, the users to provide feedback, and as the document becomes more tested over time, it will move into being a controlled document.

What about Conferences? Their posters & webpages look different.

Yes. Most TRIUMF conferences are in conjunction with other labs or organizations, and therefore, their design does not have to fall within TRIUMF's Style Guide.

What about notices that are just used at TRIUMF?

If it is an informal notice to be posted around the lab, there are no guidelines set out. Although, we do encourage you to use the colours and fonts used in the Style Guide.

If the notice is for use outside of the lab, use one of the templates. If there is a template that you would like to see, feel free to contact the Style Guide team.

Will the Style Guide be changing?

The idea is that the basis of the Style Guide is set (logos, colours, fonts, etc.) - but it is really up to you, the user to provide input and feedback to make the guide work for you. In this way, additions and alterations to the Guide can be made.

Who has created the Style Guide?

The Style Guide was created within the Strategic Planning and Communications Office.
