Drug & Alcohol Consumption

INTENT

It is TRIUMF's intent that its employees conduct their work in a condition in which they are able to properly and safely carry out all of their employment obligations, and that they not be under the influence of alcohol or recreational drugs when doing so. To that end, TRIUMF has a Zero Tolerance Policy with respect to alcohol and recreational drugs. This applies to all persons while on TRIUMF premises.

INTOXICATED EMPLOYEES OR VISITORS

For those employees suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol while performing their employment obligations, TRIUMF will exercise disciplinary action as outlined in the Progressive Discipline Policy No.12. If it is determined during this process that the employee's behavior is due to substance abuse or addiction, TRIUMF will make every effort to provide assistance to the employee in correcting the problem through counseling or treatment programs. Visitors to the TRIUMF facility who are suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol may have their visitor status and access privileges suspended or revoked.

LIQUOR ON PREMISES

With respect to the Zero Tolerance Policy, the serving and/or consuming of liquor on the TRIUMF site will not be permitted at any time, nor will the use of recreational drugs. Failure to comply with this may result in the application of disciplinary measures as outlined above.

RESPONSIBILITIES

1) It is the responsibility of every individual to avoid endangering themselves or their colleagues by ensuring that they conduct their work in a professional and safe manner, without being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
2) It is the responsibility of the supervisor to ensure this policy is followed by staff under their jurisdiction.
3) It is the responsibility of the Manager, Human Resources and Administration, to interpret this policy and advise management and staff.
