3.14 Inside the cyclotron vacuum tank

Inside the TRIUMF 520 MeV Cyclotron vacuum tank.  The top half of the cyclotron is raised four feet in order to gain access.

Stretching across the tank from left to right are the opposing rows of quarter-wavelength cavity resonators providing the 90-kilovolt accelerating voltage at 23 MHz. At the far right is one of the two cryopanels, cooled to 20 K to provide ultra-high vacuum.

This picture was taken with a fish-eye lens, thus while the image is distorted it gives one an appreciation as to the size and complexity of the accelerator components.
