4.A6 M20 Muon Beamline

The M20 beamline in the Meson Hall provides muons for experiments in condensed matter physics and nuclear chemistry.

The long quadrupole channel (foreground) allows time for pions (mean lifetime 26 billionths of a second) to decay into muons.  A steering magnet (blue) then directs them to one of two alternative locations for experiments.

The pion beam originates from the 500MeV 100uA+ proton beam from the cyclotron, colliding with the T2 target on Beamline 1A.
