Sun Run Team Accelerates to Big Win

21 April 2016

Training rain or shine, the many months of speed repeats, fast and long runs bore fruit for the TRIUMF team as they challenged themselves in Canada’s biggest road race, the Vancouver Sun Run 10K. The team of 35 TRIUMF staff and students ran hard, pushing through crowds and over several long inclines to set a speedy average time of 39:30 (based on the top 10 times).

This swift pace earned the team a 1st place finish in the High Tech Category of 102 teams, and a 2nd place finish overall of 1156 teams. More results here.

TRIUMF’s running group trains year-round and welcomes runners of any experience level to join others at the lab in scheduled casual and training runs. This is an encouraging environment to help people set and meet fitness goals.

Claire David, a graduate student from the University of Victoria, has been a member of the running group for nearly two years. This year is particularly busy for Claire as she was working on her thesis. She notes how the coaching she’s received in the running group, and particularly through the leadership of Rob Watt, have been a help to her.

"I found an excellent balance training with the club while writing my thesis,” says Claire, who defended her thesis earlier this month. “Rob is really committed to help us improve. With his regular and diverse workouts, his serene approach to coaching is complete, with numerous tips and insistence on the recovery. It works! This is my third Sun Run and each year – with Rob’s support – I have decreased my running time. This year, I finished 2 minutes 30 seconds faster than last year!"

Congratulations to all the race contestants!
