Brief Overview

TRIUMF commitments are divided into two classes. The first is ongoing commitments and the second projects. Ongoing commitments include activities like cyclotron operation and accounting. Project are typically building facilities and are defined by having a definite beginning and end. Ongoing commitments are managed based on  the calendar while projects are managed based on their phase. Project have four main phases: Initiation, Planning, Execution and Closing. There are Gate Review at the end of the Initiation, Planning and Closing phases. There may be additional status reviews during the project. It is the responsibility of the Division Head to organize the Reviews.

Once a proponent has decided that they want to start a project and have a crude estimate of the resources require, they submit a Project Charter Sheet the Portfolio Coordinator (B. Jennings) who will get it a commitment number and start the process of get it approved (or rejected). It first goes to the Director for his approval and then the Division Head to arrange the Gate Review to allow resources for a conceptual design. If approved at the Gate One Review the project is put on the Commitment List. After the conceptual design is complete it goes to a Stage 2 review to permit it to proceed to detail design and execution. At the end of the project there is a final to Gate Review to close the project.

The Project Chater Sheet (for new projects) and the Commiment Summary Sheet (for proejcts in progress and ongoing commitments) provide a two page summary of the commitment and are meant to provide a quick summary of the commitment.
