Proton Treatment Facility

The Proton Treatment Facility is located on the lower level of meson hall, next to the cyclotron vault. Protons, accelerated by the cyclotron, are first tuned by the main control room before being used in the treatment of the eye tumour.

The facility is operated in conjunction with the British Columbia Cancer Agency and the University of British Columbia Department of Ophthalmology.

The design was developed from 1993-1995 to treat melanoma of the eye in the initial phase. The facility consists of:

  • a beam delivery and patient fixation system,
  • a treatment control system, and
  • a patient waiting room.

For eye melanomas a proton beam energy of 74 MeV has been found to be optimum.
