TRIUMF Presentations in the Community

TRIUMF is an active member of the local community. During the past 18 months, TRIUMF has:

  • Met with the local civic association (University Neighbourhood Association, UNA) staff and offered a VIP tour of TRIUMF for them and their Board of Directors.
  • Met with the directors of the two closest research institutes and had follow-up discussions among the public-relations staff.  As a result of these discussions, TRIUMF and the neighbouring NRC Fuel-Cell Institute have jointly participated in two activities with the neighbourhood.
  • Contributed to UNA newsletter with special invitations to TRIUMF events.
  • Co-sponsored a summer evening lecture series at the UNA Old Barn Community Centre.  TRIUMF organized and promoted a series of monthly evening science-outreach lectures at the local community centre.  The TRIUMF Director gave the inaugural lecture to more than 50 people on 26 June 2008; the second lectures was by the NRC Fuel-Cell Institute and attracted about a dozen people.  The third and final lecture was given by Marcello Pavan and attracted an equal number of people.
  • Participated in annual UNA "Barn-Raising" neighbourhood picnic on 06 September 2008.   TRIUMF and the NRC Fuel-Cell Institute occupied the second floor of the community centre with booths showcasing educational and outreach games staffed by TRIUMF scientists (see Figure 2.3.9.1).  Hundreds of local citizens thronged the exhibits and learned about the TRIUMF science program, observed and discussed cosmic rays with a working cloud chamber, built different nuclear isotopes using marshmallows and gummy bears, and watched educational movies about particle physics and materials science.  Nearly two dozen people spent an extra two hours to take a personal tour of TRIUMF and the NRC laboratory
  • Celebrated its 40th Anniversary with the a commemorative dedication ceremony and a Community Open House.  The UNA Executive Director contributed to the ceremony with welcoming remarks.
