Special Seminar: Physical Sciences Division Mixer

Speaker: PSD Mixer, TRIUMF

Location: Auditorium

Time: 14:30

Jens Dilling - PSD updates (10 minutes); Q&A with Jens (15 minutes); Beatrice Franke - "What happens at TRIUMFs UCN project?" (25 minutes - abstract below) Discussion over coffee and snacks (30 minutes) ----- Beatrice Franke What happens in the UCN Project at TRIUMF? The objective of TRIUMFs ultra cold neutron project (UCN) is to operate a UCN source at world leading intensity. Additionally, our Japanese-Canadian collaboration wants search for the electric dipole moment of the neutron (nEDM) at a sensitivity of 10^(-27)ecm, as well as to establish a UCN user facility at a second experimental port. In my talk, I will give a brief introduction and motivation to UCN physics and also update you on the status of our project: The new spallation beam line 1U for providing free neutrons has been commissioned, and during the last shutdown we installed the cryostat necessary to reduce the neutrons' energies to the ultra cold energy regime (neV). I will include highlights from our several tests along the commissioning process and set the stage for the upcoming first UCN production at TRIUMF.
