On Tuesday, February 5th, recipients of the 2018 TRIUMF Above & Beyond Awards gathered for a group photo on TRIUMF’s front walk, joining for a closing snapshot of the lab’s inaugural peer recognition awards program. The Awards, which also served as a feather in the cap of TRIUMF’s 50th-anniversary programming, aim to highlight and celebrate exceptional individuals and teams from across the TRIUMF community.

The group of recipients exemplified a cross-section of the wider laboratory community, representing TRIUMF’s diverse scientific and engineering programs, its administrative services, and its growing number of community advocates and team-builders.

The award winners emerged from a list of nominations as diverse as it was lengthy, with nominators looking beyond the boundaries of their work areas to share recognition for the exemplary work taking place at TRIUMF. In all, nearly one hundred individuals and teams were nominated in the 7 award categories.

“It was an incredible and much appreciated surprise to me to have my peers nominate me for this award,” said Doug Preddy, who took home the Behind the Scenes Wonder Award. “While the work can be difficult and challenging at times, it’s rewarding to see the successes we all achieve. My goal here is to get jobs done and make the lab successful, and my greatest reward is seeing how TRIUMF manages to achieve so much even without the larger staff communities or higher funding you might see at other labs around the world. I really believe these achievements are due to the commitment of the people here at TRIUMF.”

“TRIUMF’s fifty-year history has been built on the character and hard work embodied by the winners and nominees,” said Dr. Jonathan Bagger, TRIUMF Director. “I am honoured to join our community in celebrating the 2018 Above & Beyond Award winners for their many contributions to our laboratory, their peers, and the people that we serve.”

The awards were presented at TRIUMF’s annual Midwinter Celebration at the Vancouver Convention Centre on January 19th, 2019.
