John A. Macdonald Scholarship

This scholarship is offered every two years. The next award will be available in 2008.

Overview

The John A. Macdonald Memorial Scholarship is intended to aid graduate students who are actively conducting research at TRIUMF and are in the later stage of Ph.D. study. It will be awarded to a graduate student whose research work is being carried out at TRIUMF on the advice of the TRIUMF Operating Committee.

The scholarship has been made possible by contributions from colleagues of the late John A. Macdonald with matching funds from TRIUMF. The scholarship may be held simultaneously with non-TRIUMF scholarships, bursaries, and fellowships. The value of the scholarship for 2008 will be $3,000.

Applications should be forwarded to TRIUMF by the student's faculty supervisor. Application forms are available at TRIUMF or may be obtained here in PDF format. Complete applications should be returned to:

Conditions for Eligibility

The John A. Macdonald Graduate Student Scholarship was created to support graduate student research activity at TRIUMF. The award will be made normally to a Ph.D. candidate who is far enough along in his/her program to have demonstrated strong research abilities. A successful applicant may re-apply in open competition in a subsequent year.

The conditions for eligibility are:

  1. The candidate has carried out a significant part of his/her research activity on-site at TRIUMF.
  2. The candidate must be an accredited student at:
    1. one of the TRIUMF member universities (University of Alberta, University of British Columbia, Carleton University, Université de Montréal, Simon Fraser University, University of Toronto, University of Victoria);
    2. one of the associate member universities (University of Guelph, University of Manitoba, McMaster University, Queen's University, University of Regina, Saint Mary's University, York University);
    3. other institutions whose faculty have significant experimental activities on-site at TRIUMF.
  3. The candidate's thesis project is based on:
    1. an experiment reviewed by one of TRIUMF's Experiments Evaluation Committees (Subatomic, Materials Science, or Life Sciences);
    2. accelerator research at TRIUMF;
    3. an off-site research program in which there is a significant contribution from TRIUMF. In this case, the candidate will be judged on the research work carried out at TRIUMF, and it must constitute a major part of his/her thesis project.
  4. The candidate should expect to receive the Ph.D. degree no earlier than September 30, 2008.
