The First Year Summer Research Experience (FYSRE) award is a scholarship for students who have completed their first year in University. Recipients have the opportunity to spend a 16 week paid work term at UBC or TRIUMF. This award honours Dr. Erich Vogt (1929-2014), one of the most distinguished Canadian nuclear physicists of his generation. For over thirty years, Erich Vogt taught bright and eager First Year Physics students. The FYSRE awards give outstanding first year students an opportunity to gain work experience in paid summer research positions. Other such research opportunities usually give preference to second and higher year students.
Erich would have been espcially proud that TRIUMF hosted two FYSRE students this past summer, the 2014 (inaugural) recipient Walter Wasserman and this year's recipient Linh Phan. TRIUMF outreach co-op student Ushieja De Zoysa interviewed them about their FYSRE experience.
Walter Wasserman
This year, inaugural award recipient and current third year biophysics student Walter Wasserman is at TRIUMF working on superconducting radiofrequency cavities. The goal of improving the cavities is to better accelerate the particles in a straight line. Walter worked under the supervision of Bob Laxdal, Interim Associate Lab Director, Accelerator Division.
Linh Phan
Linh Phan is the 2016 FYSRE recipient, a first year computer science and physics student at UBC. Linh worked on TITAN, the ion trap for atomic and nuclear science and is working on the EBIT (electron beam ion trap) which traps exotic ions to measure their masses. Linh worked under the supervision of Carla Babcock, Postdoctoral Research Fellow and Jens Dilling, Interim Associate Lab Director, Science Division.
