TRIUMF Forges European Connections

14 May 2013

Editor Dr. Gabriele-Elizabeth Koerner and seven members of the editorial board for Nuclear Physics News were hosted by TRIUMF last month for their biannual editorial board meeting. Nuclear Physics News is published on behalf of the Nuclear Physics European Collaboration Committee, an Expert Committee of the European Science Foundation, with colleagues from Europe, America, and Asia. Members, together with NuPECC Chair Angela Bracco, met to discuss content of future issues of NPN quarterly magazine; Head of TRIUMF's Science Division, Dr. Reiner Kruecken, sits on the editorial board for Canada.

The most recent issue of NPN featured a laboratory portrait of SNOLAB, as well as TRIUMF's Dr. Glen Marshall's exposé in the spring 2013 edition about advances made by TWIST- the TRIUMF Weak Intensity Symmetry Test experiment. There was also an overview in the previous year of the first decade of science from TRIUMF's ISAC program. By hosting this meeting and others like it, TRIUMF encourages the international research community to become familiar with Canada.

"Nuclear Physics News with its laboratory portraits, feature articles on current research, and updates on worldwide activities, is a unique vehicle for the international nuclear physics community to stay connected. " said Dr. Kruecken. "As demonstrated by this editorial meeting, TRIUMF is fully integrated in the nuclear physics community and the visit allowed the board members to gain first hand insight into the existing developments at TRIUMF and in Canada,"

Other participating Board members represented ISOLDE/ University of Madrid, University of Bari, RIKEN, Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, Yale University and the Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics. They were treated to a tour around the TRIUMF facility where they learned about the cutting edge experiments being conducted at the lab, especially the upcoming ARIEL facility, rare-isotope physics and new technologies for medical-isotope production.

As part of TRIUMF's commitment to linking the Canadian science to the international realm, this meeting exemplifies the close ties that are being forged to advance Canadian research on the world stage. Thank you to the members of the board who attended, we hope that you walked away with good memories and a deeper understanding and appreciation of TRIUMF!
