TRIUMF Staff - Help Needed!

It's TRIUMF's 40th anniversary, and we're having a party!

We need your help to show off the lab.

Help make TRIUMF Shine!

TRIUMF will be throwing open its doors Saturday, August 8 from 1-5 pm for a public open house, while a 40th Anniversary ceremony will take place at the apple-tree circle at 2pm.

This is a complex affair which will require the support and energy of the entire lab, students, scientists, technicians, and engineers alike to make it the resounding success TRIUMF hopes it will be.  Based on past experience, we can expect anywhere from a few hundred to more than a thousand visitors.

The Director's Office and other TRIUMF staff have formed an Organizing Committee and have been working hard on plans for the event.

Here is the broad-brush outline of what will happen:

A.  An Open House tour for the public.  The public will be allowed into the site, through the main auto gate, and will be free to choose which tour stops they will visit. (There are not nearly enough experienced tour guides to accommodate the expected number of visitors).  Student "shepherds" will guide the guests and ensure they do not cross into restricted areas (see map).

B.  The tour stops will be (see map):  Lobby; Proton Hall extension; Control Room; M15; Meson Hall bay door area; top of Cyclotron; PET/TR13 area;  ISAC-I  between DRAGON, beta-NMR, and TRILIS; ISAC-II with TIGRESS and the SC Linac module.

C.  There will be a play area for younger kids in the parking area by stores, with food, clowns, and physics demos.

D.  Most tour stops will have a physics demo associated with it, some of which we have here at TRIUMF, some borrowed from UBC and SFU.

E. At 2pm there will be 40th Anniversary ceremony with a plaque unveiling TRIUMF circle.

To make this a big success, we will need the help of the experimental groups, engineers, and technicians to put together interesting displays for the guests at each tour stop.

For the Open House to be the big success and hallmark of our 40th Anniversary everyone will be required to pitch in.

We will need your help with:

1.  Displays at each tour stop: There should be a nice display outlining all the work done at each stop.  Tables, poster walls, can be set up etc.  If you want to give out brochures, or show a video, that can be arranged as well. The Organizing Committee cannot possibly set up all the displays, but they can help.

2.  Basic Science Posters: Some of you have been contacted by Shirley Reeve about creating posters.  These will be standard issues at each tour stop. They should explain the science in the MOST BASIC WAY possible, i.e. we want to give the least science-savvy people something to read that will give them a basic idea of what is going on.  These posters will be front and centre at each stop.

Of course, each stop can also have collections of others posters (e.g. from conferences) and brochures, etc with more detail.

3.  Staffing the stations:  Here's where the grad and co-op students will have an opportunity to show off their physics knowledge.  They will also double as shepherds and will have portable PA systems to allow them to speak to the guests without losing their voice.

4.  Physics Demos: We have planned that each station will have an interesting physics demo.  The Organizing Committee has some ideas (you will be contacted individually) nonetheless if you can think of a nice demonstration to show the guests please let us know.

Volunteering:

TRIUMF Staff and Student: Volunteers are needed for this event and all TRIUMF staff who make themelves available are reminded to identify this on their 2009 PPR forms. This will not count as overtime but those who help out will be acknowledged at a later date.

Technical & Safety Volunteers:  For those needed for mandatory technical or safety assistance, time can be put towards a Christmas closure day.

The Organizing Committee will be at hand to help with preparations, so if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Sandi Miller, Tim Meyer or Marcello Pavan.
