Minister of Advanced Education Visits TRIUMF

The Hon. Murray Coell, Minister of Advanced Education, and Brent Sauder, Assistant Deputy Minister-Research, Technology and Innovation Division, visited TRIUMF on Monday, July 23rd. Also in attendance were: Don Brooks, Associate Vice President Research-University of British Columbia (UBC); Colin Jones, Director of CFI Strategic Planning-Simon Fraser University (SFU); Professor Mike Vetterli, TRIUMF researcher and SFU faculty member; Jon Stoessl, MD, Director of the Pacific Parkinson’s Research Centre; and Francois Benard, MD, the new UBC LEEF Chair at BCCA.

Hosted by TRIUMF Director Nigel Lockyer and Associate Director Jean-Michel Poutissou, Minister Coell was given a tour of the TRIUMF facilities, including MDS Nordion. He was shown the ISAC-I and ISAC-II research areas, the PET isotope production facility, the MDS Nordion hot cells and the large molecule tagging room. The tour of MDS Nordion was given by Jerry Porter, General Manager-Vancouver Operations.

Minister Coell also met a number of students from BC, across Canada, and the UK when he stopped by the ongoing assembly of the new TIGRESS detector facility in the ISAC-II building.

During his visit, Minister Coell was introduced to TRIUMF’s new initiatives in the Life Sciences Program, the ATLAS Tier 1 Centre, and our superconducting RF accelerator initiative.

The Minister was impressed with the research facilities at TRIUMF and the impact of our program on the citizens of British Columbia and Canada and he thanked us for the invitation to visit TRIUMF.
