Location: TRIUMF Auditorium

The agenda can be found on Indico.

Light refreshments and pastries will be served during coffee breaks.

The scope of this third ARIEL Science Workshop is:

  • to inform the international scientific community of the capabilities of ARIEL and ISAC;
  • to highlight technical progress made on various aspects of the project;
  • to identify unique and world-leading scientific opportunities for ARIEL and ISAC; and
  • to describe the construction and funding status as well as possibly to refine the planned implementation scenario.

Special attention will be paid to experiments probing fundamental symmetries of nature, especially those enabled either by proton spallation on ARIEL or ISAC targets or by the possible availability of long beam times as TRIUMF with ARIEL and ISAC evolves into a multi-user radioactive beam facility.

Invited speakers include Harvey Gould (LBNL), Peter Mueller (ANL), Eduardo Gomez (San Luis Potosi), Ritu Kanungo (Saint Mary's University), John Behr (TRIUMF), and Lia Merminga (TRIUMF).

Further information on ARIEL is online, including schematics.

The Local Organizing Committee and the International Organizing & Program Committee lists can be found here.

Please be sure to register if you plan to attend the ARIEL Science Workshop.

Date: Thursday, July 18th, 2013
Time: 08:30 to 17:30
Location: Auditorium

The agenda can be found on Indico.

To celebrate the scientific accomplishments of the 8π Gamma-Ray Spectrometer, a retrospective event is being organized at TRIUMF. It will take the form of a Symposium with invited speakers, covering the more than 25 years of discovery.

The instrument was conceived as a joint Chalk River/ University collaboration, and it was sited at TASCC in its early years, beginning operation in 1986, and ending with the closure of TASCC in 1997. At that time it was moved to the 88 inch Cyclotron of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and then to TRIUMF-ISAC in 2000. Highlights from the three periods will be presented. The instrument is in its final year of operation at TRIUMF and will be decommissioned in January 2014, making way for the GRIFFIN Spectrometer.

Confirmed invited speakers include: Jim Waddington (McMaster), David Ward, David Radford (ORNL), Andreas Goergen (UiO), Guy Savard (ANL), Alfredo Galindo-Uribarri (ORNL), Takashi Nakatsukasa (RIKEN), Mitch Allmond (ORNL), Fred Sarazin (CSM), John Wood (Georgia Tech), and Steve Yates (U of Kentucky).

If you will be attending the 8pi Spectrometer Symposium, please be sure to register.

The poster for the event can be found here.

Important Dates

Registration Deadline: July 9th, 2013

Accommodations

TRIUMF House is sold out for this time period. But if you would like to be put on the waitlist, please contact TRIUMF House. There are 34 rooms at TRIUMF House and the summer is a busy time for them (especially with a week of science division meetings).

On-campus alternatives include: The Carey Centre, a variety of options from UBC Accommodations (including Gage Tower, West Coast Suites, Pacific Spirit Hostel, Marine Drive Residence), Vancouver School of Theology, Green College, and St. John's College. If you would like suggestions for off-campus accommodations please contact Niki Martin.

Bus Information

Complete bus route and schedule information can be found online at http://www.translink.ca/. For those staying on the UBC campus, the easiest way to get to TRIUMF is to take the #41 bus "Joyce Station" to the south campus. There is a bus stop right outside of TRIUMF. The stop is called "TRIUMF Centre". You can catch the #41 bus at any bus stop along Wesbrook Mall (heading south). Be sure to wave down the bus since there are multiple buses that stop at each of the stops. Alternatively, you can catch the #25 "Brentwood Station", #29 "29 Ave Stn", #43 "Joyce Station (Express), or the #49 "Metrotown Stn" and get off at 16th Avenue and Wesbrook Mall and then walk south to get to TRIUMF (which is about a 10 minute walk). You can catch all of these buses at the main UBC bus loop.

Parking Information

TRIUMF now has a paid parking lot. The parking lot fee information can be found at http://www.triumf.ca/home/for-public/parking-information.
